A prison officer who walked into a robbery at a Chinese supermarket in Arouca attempted to run away but was chased down by one of the armed thieves.
A passing colleague saw what was happening and in aid of the fleeing officer, took out his firearm and shot the assailant.
The bandit’s three accomplices, one of whom is 16 years old, subsequently surrendered to the prison officers.
The wounded man was taken to hospital but died while undergoing treatment. Police said up to last evening the dead bandit remained unidentified.
Police and prison officers are searching for an inmate of the Golden Grove Maximum Security Prison who escaped custody this morning while being held in a holding bay at the Arima Magistrate's Court.

According to a post on the Police Service Twitter account posted yesterday afternoon, Andre “Famo” Lavia, also known as “Brandon Thomas” and “Wetman Andre” was charged with murdering Boodooram on January 26.

CNC3 understands the 41-year-old officer was arrested at his Princes Town home last evening after extensive enquiries were conducted.
Reports are, the officer allegedly went to the Frederick street prison on Saturday night with 2.5 kilos of packaged marijuana.
The officer then reported to his seniors on duty that he was forced to bring the drugs in for a prisoner.
