PNM condemns Duke's double murder remarks

The People's National Movement (PNM) Tobago Council is calling on political leader of the Progressive Democratic Patriots(PDP) and Minority Leader of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) Watson Duke to apologise for statements he made following the double murder on the island on Thursday.

"Tobago Council of the People's National Movement denounces the actions taken, and words used by Minority Leader Mr Watson Duke in his distasteful and frivolous attempt to viciously politicise the murders of Mr (John) Mills and Ms (Euyln) John," the Council said in a statement.

Immediately following the murders, Duke posted a video statement calling on Chief Secretary Kelvin Charles to resign as he is responsible for the murders.

" . . . Kelvin Charles must resign . . . he has caused trouble and darkness to fall upon Tobagonians," Duke said.

In a statement expressing condolences to the family and friends of the victins, the Council demanded thatDuke "promptly apologise to the family of Mr Mills and Ms John, as well as all of Tobago.

"A family's grief must never be used as a vehicle upon which political mileage may be obtained. The island's sorrow must never be scandalised to suit the agenda of an insensitive zealot."

Touching on the issue of safety, the Council urged Tobagonians "to work collectively" to make the island safer and urged them to "stand up, step forward, and speak out" if they had information on the killings.

"We call on each Tobagonian, along with all the formal arms of National Security, to collaborate in ensuring that the sorrow we now feel never repeats itself," the Council said.
